I’ve heard the same thing about Indiana. This is one of the rare situations where I would recommend you consider the University of Hawaii at Manoa. It’s one of the few American campuses where more emphasis is put on Asian languages than European. Many Korean, Japanese, and Chinese students (as well as Americans of similar ancestry), attend the university, so you get plenty of practice. They also have instruction in relatively obscure languages and dialects like Ilokano (the maintenance staff usually speak Ilokano) or Khmer. And sometimes you get members of ethnic groups like Manchu or Taiwan Aborigine attending the university. Your language abilities may give you an edge in trying to find an off-campus job in Honolulu. I had a friend, for example, who delivered cell phones to Japanese businessman to make ends meet.

Yale is known for Chinese instruction. A good friend of mine used to run the Korean Language program at Harvard, but he passed away a few years ago.
